Escape the Ordinary: How DIY Escape Rooms Can Revolutionize Learning

As educators, we’re constantly seeking innovative ways to engage our students and foster a deeper understanding of complex concepts. One unconventional approach that’s gaining traction is the use of DIY escape rooms. These immersive, interactive experiences have been shown to enhance collaboration, creativity, and problem-solving skills – essential qualities for success in today’s fast-paced, ever-changing world.

Unlocking the Power of Teamwork

Recently, the Teaching, Learning and Technology Center’s Instructional Design team at Seton Hall University designed an immersive escape room experience for over 30 members of the Division of Student Services. The challenge: rescue the Pirate from the brig by deciphering clues and solving riddles rooted in Seton Hall history. The results were astounding – teams of four worked together, leveraging their collective strengths to overcome obstacles and emerge victorious.

The Pirate Ship-themed Room

One team, comprising Nicole LaCapria, Brandon Larmore, and Joshua Dornbos, successfully completed the puzzle with nearly four and a half minutes to spare. Reflecting on their experience, they highlighted the collaborative benefits, emphasizing enhanced communication, decision-making, and creative problem-solving skills through this dynamic team-building exercise.

“The escape room activity was an excellent way to build camaraderie and trust among team members. It forced us to think creatively and work together to achieve a common goal.” – Nicole LaCapria

The Instructional Design team has been pioneering the use of escape rooms in higher education, introducing the concept at Seton Hall’s 2019 Welcome Weekend. Since then, they’ve crafted immersive experiences tailored for both faculty and students, featuring themes such as a locker room inspired by the University’s esteemed basketball program.

Unlocking the Potential of Gamification

The TLTC invites educators to explore the numerous benefits of building career-readiness skills through gamified content. Join them for two sessions, where instructors will receive a comprehensive toolkit for crafting game-based learning activities. From DIY escape rooms to crossword puzzles, Jeopardy, Wheel of Fortune, and beyond, these sessions aim to empower educators with creative tools to enhance the learning experience.

“Gamification has the potential to revolutionize the way we teach and learn. By incorporating game design elements, we can create engaging, interactive experiences that foster deeper understanding and retention.” – Brandon Larmore
