The Quest for Speed: Scottish Brothers Aim to Smash Pacific Rowing Record

The MacLean brothers, Ewan, Lachlan, and Jamie, are no strangers to pushing the limits of human endurance. Having already conquered the Atlantic Ocean in a record-breaking 35 days, they’re now setting their sights on the Pacific, with the goal of becoming the fastest people to row across the vast expanse of water.

The Pacific Ocean, a daunting challenge for even the most seasoned rowers

Their secret weapon? A cutting-edge, ultra-lightweight boat crafted using Formula 1 technology. Weighing in at a mere 280kg, this marvel of engineering is expected to shave off months from their crossing time.

“We are going to be able to average between 0.5 and one knot faster all the time,” Jamie said, highlighting the significance of their innovative approach.

The brothers have been working tirelessly with specialists in The Netherlands to perfect their vessel, employing a process typically used in the construction of F1 cars or jet wings. The result is a hull and deck fabricated using an autoclave, a high-pressure oven that minimizes the need for heavy epoxy resin.

Ewan, an engineer for Dyson, explained that the new boat’s strength lies not only in its lightweight design but also in its ability to withstand the harsh marine environment. “The boats made from carbon are much stronger,” he emphasized.

As the brothers prepare to embark on The Rare Whisky 101 Pacific Challenge next May, they’re aware that their innovative approach might raise eyebrows. However, Jamie is quick to defend their methods, saying, “I don’t know if innovation is cheating.”

Other modifications to the boat include a bulletproof mat for the sleeping pod, designed to protect against marlin strikes. The brothers are also working on a solution to remove barnacles during the challenge, a crucial task to maintain their speed.

With their sights set on the Pacific, the MacLean brothers are poised to make history once again. Will they succeed in their quest for speed and become the fastest people to row across the Pacific Ocean?
