The second annual Technology Showcase at Norfolk Naval Shipyard (NNSY) was a resounding success, with over 50 vendors participating in the event. The showcase, held on May 22-23, 2024, at the shipyard’s Production Training Facility, provided an opportunity for the production workforce to explore new technologies that can help them meet their mission safely and efficiently.

NNSY’s production workforce came out to explore the tools that may be beneficial in helping them meet their mission safely and efficiently.

According to Shipyard Commander Captain Jip Mosman, the demand signal of the Navy has drastically increased, and when ships are in for maintenance and repairs, they only have a limited amount of time before they need to get back out to sea and on to their next mission. Therefore, it is essential to get the work done as quickly, efficiently, and effectively as possible.

“I have an amazing workforce here at the shipyard filled with talented, energetic, passionate people, and I need to pair them with the tools to help them be more efficient and effective to make sure that we as a shipyard succeed in our mission.”

The vendors at the showcase provided a wide variety of products and services to support shipyard maintenance and repairs. These included laser ablation, 3D printing, and confined space gas monitoring systems, among others.

3D printing was one of the many technologies on display at the showcase.

Inside Machine Shop (Shop 38) Mechanic Casey Pearce was impressed with the products on display, stating that they can help mechanics be more productive. His colleague, Donovan Beale, agreed, adding that the confined space gas monitoring system is something that can save a lot of lives.

The success of this year’s Technology Showcase is a testament to the importance of innovation and technology in ship repair and maintenance. As the Navy continues to evolve and adapt to new challenges, it is crucial to stay ahead of the curve and leverage the latest technologies to ensure mission success.
