Veterans Day: Honoring Service Across Rochester
As we approach Veterans Day, a federal holiday dedicated to honoring those who have served in the United States military, the Rochester area is preparing a series of events that bring the community together to celebrate and remember the sacrifices made by veterans. This year’s observances, which span several days, include parades, ceremonies, and moments of reflection for both veterans and their families.

A Breakfast to Remember
Friday, November 8th, marks the 13th annual Veterans Day Breakfast at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT). This event is free and open to everyone, reflecting the community spirit of Rochester. The keynote speaker this year is Laura Heltz, an Army veteran who served for eight years. Her insights and experiences will undoubtedly resonate with attendees as they come together to honor veterans.
Participants can enjoy a hearty breakfast while engaging in conversation and camaraderie. To learn more about this event and register, check the RIT community pages.
A Grand Parade on Saturday
On Saturday, November 9th, Monroe County will host its third annual Veterans Day Parade. The parade is set to commence at 10:30 a.m. from the corner of South Goodman Street and Highland Avenue. This year, the event will feature a float dedicated to Vietnam War veterans, among other notable attractions.
The parade will culminate at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial located in Gary Beikirch Park, Highland Park. Attendees can expect a vibrant display of musical marching units, military-style vehicles, and veterans’ service organizations. After the parade, an honor ceremony will pay tribute to the sacrifices and service of veterans.
Local Celebrations Across Towns
Chili Town is also joining in the celebrations. A free breakfast specifically for veterans and their guests will take place on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Community leaders, including the town supervisor and board members, will be present to honor those who served. Interested participants should register in advance by calling the Town of Chili.
In Brighton, a formal ceremony will unfold on Monday, November 11th, at 2 p.m. at the Brighton Veterans Memorial in Buckland Park. The service will honor the David J. Kauffman Post 41 of the Jewish War Veterans, signifying the impact of local veterans on the community.
Pittsford will also host a respectful gathering at the Veterans Monument in Carpenter Park during the same timeframe. This ceremony will run from 11 a.m. to noon, providing an opportunity for residents to reflect and express gratitude toward their local veterans.
Irondequoit will hold its own commemorative service at town hall, starting at 11 a.m. Organised by American Legion Post #134, this gathering is yet another chance for residents to unite in honoring those who served.
Community Involvement: A Lasting Tribute
These events across Rochester are not just about ceremonies but are a reminder of the enduring bond between veterans and their communities. Residents are encouraged to participate actively, whether through attending events, volunteering, or simply taking a moment to acknowledge the sacrifices made by these brave individuals.
As we prepare for Veterans Day, it’s essential to reflect on the commitment and courage that our veterans have shown. The series of events throughout the weekend serves as a robust reminder that their service is honored not just on Veterans Day but every day of the year.
“Observing Veterans Day is an opportunity for us all to not just remember our heroes but to support their legacy in our everyday lives,” said a local veteran.
