German industrial giant Siemens has announced plans to acquire the industrial drive technology division of ebm-papst, a leading manufacturer of electric motors and high-tech fans. The move is part of Siemens’ strategy to strengthen its position in the rapidly growing factory automation market.

According to ebm-papst CEO Klaus Geissdoerfer, the division, which employs 650 people, is a perfect fit for Siemens’ product portfolio. “We are occupying a niche where Siemens has a gap,” Geissdoerfer told Reuters. The acquisition will allow ebm-papst to focus on its core business of air and heating technology.

“The acquisition will enable us to tap new business and customer potential in the rapidly growing market for intelligent, battery-powered drive solutions in intralogistics as well as mobile robot solutions,” said Siemens’ Cedrik Neike.

The acquisition includes ebm-papst’s industrial drive technology division

The industrial drive technology division accounts for less than 10% of ebm-papst’s consolidated turnover of 2.54 billion euros ($2.77 billion) and is profitable, according to Geissdoerfer. The purchase price has not been disclosed, but the transaction is expected to close by mid-2025.

Siemens sees potential in intelligent, battery-powered drive solutions for factory automation

Siemens’ acquisition of ebm-papst’s industrial drive technology division is a strategic move to expand its presence in the booming factory automation market. With the addition of ebm-papst’s expertise in electric motors and drives, Siemens is well-positioned to offer innovative solutions for intralogistics and mobile robotics applications.

As industries continue to embrace automation and digitalization, the demand for intelligent, energy-efficient drive systems is expected to grow significantly. Siemens’ latest acquisition demonstrates its commitment to staying at the forefront of this technological revolution and delivering cutting-edge solutions to its customers worldwide.
