Preseason prep

The Kamehameha Schools Maui baseball team is gearing up for the new Maui Interscholastic League (MIL) season, and they’re doing it with a technological edge. Senior right-handed pitcher Kaimi Kahalekai, a top-notch Major League Baseball draft prospect, is taking his game to the next level with the help of a Qubit device.

The Qubit device allows head coach Shane Dudoit to communicate directly with catcher Nakea Kahalehau through a hand-held walkie-talkie-type device, eliminating the need for verbal signals and wristband checks. This new technology has already made a significant impact on Kahalekai’s performance, allowing him to focus on his rhythm and dominate on the mound.

Kahalekai in action

In his three preseason outings, Kahalekai has been devastating on the opposition, with a fastball that touches 95-96 mph and a devastating slider that spins in the mid-80s range. His curveball and change-up are also proving to be effective tools in his arsenal.

The Qubit device has taken away the need for Kahalekai to wait for his catcher to give him the sign, allowing him to work faster and stay in rhythm. This new system has also made life easier for Kahalehau, who can now focus on giving the signal to the pitcher without having to look to the dugout for instructions.

Kahalehau and Kahalekai

Kahalehau, who is playing for injured MIL All-Star Duke Aloy, has not caught on a consistent basis since he was a youth player in the seventh grade. However, with the Qubit device, he’s found it easier to communicate with Kahalekai and get into a rhythm.

Assistant coach Aaron Loque also has an ear link to the device, allowing him to change the position of players in the infield and outfield as needed for the specific pitch.

Coach Dudoit, who is also a scout for the Texas Rangers, has seen Kahalekai mature greatly in the last 10 months, especially after he enjoyed a breakout summer. Kahalekai has been contacted by all 30 Major League Baseball organizations, but he is 50-50 on whether he will take his draft opportunity or attend the University of Texas.

The Warriors are set to kick off their MIL season on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. against Maui High at Maehara Stadium. With Kahalekai on the mound and the Qubit device on their side, they’re looking to make a strong start to the season.
